Prerequisites
To be enrolled in this course you should have either

á      Received Pacific University credit for Math 125 (Precalculus) or its equivalent

á      Been placed at level III or higher. To have been placed at this level, you will have had at least three years of high school mathematics including trigonometry and scored at least 550 on the Math SAT or equivalent.

Class Resources
We will use the text Calculus Concepts & Connections, by Smith and Minton, 2006.  We will also use Maple in the computer lab Strain 324.

Graded Material

Homework (5%)

Homework is assigned and collected weekly. Homework should be complete and neat. All work must be done on 8.5" x 11" 3-hole punched paper. No late homework is accepted. Calculus homework problems can be quite challenging. It is critical that you start the homework as soon as you can each week.

Maple Projects (5%)

We will have several computer laboratory projects using the computer algebra system Maple.   For each lab, you and your partner will submit one report that will be graded for accuracy, completeness, and presentation.  Lab reports are due at the beginning of class on the due date.  No late projects are accepted.

Group Class Project (5%)

More information on this project will be disseminated soon.

Quizzes (15%)

There will be several quizzes during the term.  Quiz dates are listed in the calendar and are subject to change. No make-up quizzes are given.

Midterm Exams (35%)

We will have 2 exams during the semester.  Exam dates are listed in the calendar and are subject to change.

Final Exam (35%)

According to College policy, you must take the final exam at its scheduled time.  See Page 3 for the scheduled time for your section. Please make travel plans accordingly.

Gateway Exam

At the end of the first week of class you will take a gateway exam.  This short exam will cover basic prerequisite material for the course. You are required to pass this exam in order to pass the class. However, in no other way will it count towards your final grade. A passing score is achieved on the gateway exam by missing at most one question. No partial credit is awarded, but retests will be offered. No calculators are allowed on the exam.

Attendance and Class Participation

It is imperative that each of you arrives to class on time every day.  Students with a record of arriving late or missing class will receive a warning from me.  If the behavior continues, further action (from a lower final grade to dismissal from the course) will result.  If you will miss a class because of an official Pacific University event, you must let me know in advance.  We will work together to schedule a time for you to complete, in advance, an exam that is missed because of such an event.  Without this notice, no make-ups will be given.  Due dates are strict. No late work is accepted.  Math is not a spectator sport!

Academic Honesty

Any breach of standards for academic honesty as defined in the Pacific University catalog will be reported to the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and will carry a penalty of a grade of ÒFÓ for the course and possible additional sanctions that may include suspension or dismissal from the university.

Learning Support Services

Services and accommodations are available to students covered under the ADA.  If students require accommodation, they must contact Edna K. Gehring, Director of LSS, at X2107.  She will meet with students, review the documentation of their disabilities, and discuss the services Pacific offers.  Contact should be at the earliest possible point in time.
